We went to TGI Friday's last night and then caught a showing of the new National Treasure movie. It was pretty good, a little too much like the first one, but definitely worth seeing. Anyway, afterwords we stopped at Target to find some sparkling grape juice or cider to ring in New Year since we couldn't buy alcohol since it was after 9:00pm. No luck finding any, so I spied some strawberry, pomegranate soda that looked good. A little before midnight we cracked it open and pretty much right after I drank it I knew things were not going to end well. At the stroke of midnight I was throwing up...yuck! Last year I thew up on New Year's at the movie theater, so at least this was in the comfort of my own home...but this better not be a new tradition. I truely hope the saying that whatever you're doing at midnight is what you'll be doing the rest of the year is false. I was talking to Kyra about this a little, and what I think is going on is my body just kinda shuts down when it gets pushed too hard. We've been pretty busy with Christmas and I haven't been eating well and I think this is my body's way of saying, okay, you're done.
add a comment | 2 commentsWe puppy sat last weekend for Layla, a 13 week old beagle. Adorable as she is, she wreaked havoc on our relatively quiet lives. Despite putting her outside about every half hour, she piddled all over the house, dropped three loads on the hardwood floor, and chewed through our laptop's power cable. Richard was for the most part out of the puppy stage when we got him, and we found ourselves thankful for that this weekend. We also kept asking ourselves, is this what it's like to have kids? A little being needing constant attention...always getting into things...crying (albeit a baby wouldn't be in a kennel) throughout the night...gulp.
For now, we're happy to have Richard as our baby, and to help further that status, my sister-in-law Amy got him a nook for Christmas which is fast becoming his favorite toy. I think he's sooo cute when he chews on it.

My friend Kerri turned me on to this website Etsy a little while ago, but only recently have I started digging around on it. I've made two purchases that I'm quite excited about; both are handmade, one of a kind items. The first is a picture frame and the second is a tote that I intend to use as a lunch bag and carrier for various items to and from work. I haven't receive either item yet--I'm anxiously awaiting them.
I've been thinking about what I could see on Etsy...not so much for the money, but more for fun. Now that I've conquered (well, somewhat) my sewing machine and my mother-in-law gave me some sewing necessities I was thinking about some pillows...who knows.
You may think these are just lamps...but they are so much more. I spied the green one at Target and liked it immediately; then last weekend when shopping I saw it was on sale...and if there is one thing I've learned about things at Target, it's buy now or you'll likely never see it again. So I did. But then I got it home and although the shade looked white in the store, it turned out to be yellowish when the bulb is turned on; and since it only holds a 40 watt bulb that further made it look weird to me. So I got the idea in my head that I would go back to Target and buy the vase that matches the lamp and use a lamp kit to make that into a lamp with a shade that pleased me.
Slight digression here...this kind of thing happens to me a lot. I find something that is very close to what I want, but not exactly and instead of just accepting the "flaw" or just not buying it, I start on a quest to make it work somehow. This process usually involves spray paint, but in this case, my trusty side kick was of no use. Do this happen to anyone else?
So back to the lamp making adventure. Found a kit at Menards but the rubber stopper that's supposed to fit in the neck of the vase didn't fit...then found a shade I liked but it didn't work with the lamp kit. I pondered just swapping out the shade from my original purchase but a) the new shade didn't fit the existing lamp either and b) I somehow couldn't bare the thought of throwing away/not using a perfectly good lamp shade, despite it's yellowish appearance.
Enter Target's clearance merchandise. I found a new lamp base on clearance at Target (see the lamp on the right) and was able to take the yellow shade (which you can't tell from the picture is yellowish, but trust me, in person it is) from the green lamp and use it on the clearance lamp...then Eric rigged up some cardboard/tape concoction to make the lamp shade I did like fit on the green lamp.
How I get myself into these decorating dramas, I still don't know. I enjoy decorating and like the challenge associated with it, but it never fails that near the end of my journey I get weary and think to myself, "It's just a lamp. No one cares but me or will even notice that the shade is too yellow." But I always press on, and when I look at the finshed product I'm happy. And that makes all the difference.
add a comment | 1 commentsYesterday was a weird eating day. I was running late for church so I had some wheat thins and some fruit snacks for breakfast. Then I went straight from church to a movie and didn't have time for lunch, so I snacked on some popcorn...then right after the movie I had a tuna pita which was the closest I got to a normal meal. For whatever reason when I got home I decided to snack a bit...so I had a bunch of reduced fat wheat thins and some hummus and then a big scoop of cake icing (a Stevens delicacy). Anyway, that last batch of random food did not sit well and about a half hour after eating it I threw up. Now, Eric has gotten really good at accommodating my digestive pyrotechnics. So much so, I think he should patent a throw up kit. The kit would contain items and the patented throw up process:
All kidding aside, my wonderful husband is always there for me in my time of need and I am amazed by his compassion and love for me.

Now the range of our possible sufferings is determined by the largeness and nobility of our aims. It is possible to evade a multitude of sorrows by the cultivation of an insignificant life. Indeed, if it be a man's ambition to avoid the troubles of life the receipt is perfectly simple: let him shed his ambitions in every direction. Let him cut the wings of every soaring purpose, and let him assiduously cultivate a little life.... Cultivate deafness and you are saved from the horrors of discords. Cultivate blindness, and you are saved from the assault of the ugly. Stupefy a sense and you shut out a world...that is why so many people, and even so many professedly Christian people, get through life so easily, and with a minimum acquaintance with tribulation. It is because they have reduced their souls to a minimum. Tiny souls can dodge through life; bigger souls are blocked on every side.

While in Florida last week I went to the largest farmer's/flea market I've ever seen. These huge pavilions were filled with everything from 400 thread count sheets for $20 to adorable puppies. The farmer's market pavilion was about 100 feet long and filled with a wide array of fresh fruit and vegetables.
I'm in mourning…or will be soon. We’ve decided to give up the Dish and our beloved DVR. Several key factors played into this decision. The first being my utter lack of willpower when it comes to tv watching. Despite cutting back on shows (i.e. Prison Break, Grey’s Anatomy, numerous HGTV programs, et cetera) I still find myself watching the same amount of tv every week. I find if it’s on, I watch it, despite my often total lack of interest in a show. Eric enjoys his daily fix of PTI on ESPN, but is totally fine with this tv expulsion. I, however (as stated earlier) am in mourning.
Eric and I have been pondering ways to spend more quality time together…we’ve tried various avenues in the past such as buying Othello, taking a class together, buying our bikes…but it never seems to amount to much. We’ve cut back on our involvement in various organizations and yet I/we don’t feel like we spend that much time together. It’s not that our marriage is need of repair; it’s just that we realize this child-free time in our lives won’t last forever and we need to take advantage it. I’m sheepishly willing to admit my tv addiction is the main culprit. Many an evening has been wasted because I couldn’t pry myself away from another decorating show.
The second reason for the nix of the satellite is Dave Ramsey. We have a financial goal of being debt-free or nearly debt-free (except for our house) before we have children and we are following the financial wisdom of Dave. The satellite (combined with a few other cuts) is an easy way to contribute to our debt snowball.
So, in this time of difficulty your support and words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated. As well as some advise…the satellite will disappear probably within a month. Do I make a clean break now (cutting back to the shows we’ll have with just the basic cable) or ease myself out by perhaps cutting out a day of tv watching a week?
The satellite goes away on Monday. Tear. I have come up with a couple things to fill my time...
We had Eric's parents and my parents over for Easter and the boys did an amazing job on our basement. We've been slowly chipping away at it for about a year, but last weekend the boys sheetrocked the ceiling and it's made a huge difference. It's starting to feel like a room!
.jpg)
Eric is 6'2" and Roger is 6'6" while my dad is only about 5'10" so there were lots of short jokes flying around...Eric and Roger can just reach up and touch the ceiling...it's so crazy.

I bought a tin subway sign (very cool) from www.allposters.com and at the end of my transaction a little pop up notified me that they would be adding my purchase information to my Facebook news feed. Firstly, I’m wondering how they know I have a Facebook account (I’m guessing from my email) and secondly, how do they get access to it?
I logged on to Facebook to see what the deal was, and in the main feed area was the notification—thankfully I had the ability to remove it but it seems like a HUGE invasion of privacy. I get enough annoying emails from allposters.com…I don’t need them invading my Facebook space.

Several weeks ago I was pulling out of the parking lot of the River Falls Campus after doing some training when I dropped my bottle of Dr. Pepper. Thankfully the cap was on, but then, without even thinking about it I opened the bottle to take a drink. Turns out, not such a wise move on my part. Soda came gushing out of the bottle all over me and my car. I frantically slammed on the brakes (thank the Lord I wasn't driving in traffic but merely in a relatively empty lot) and held the bottle over the passenger side floor. I sheepishly tried to sop up the soda with some napkins I had in my car, but was forced to drive the rest of the way home with sticky fingers.
Several hours later on my way home from work, I found the knob that controls the fan speed in my car now sticks due to soda that must have sprayed behind it. Last weekend I totally cleaned out my car, vacuumed it...wiped everything down...and took Woolite carpet cleaner to some of the Dr. P stained upholstery. I thought the incident was finally behind me (save for the sticky knob) but then yesterday while fidgeting with my keys I found dried soda on the back of my automatic car door opener thing----will the remnants of this incident never end?!
What I find interesting is that ever since that incident, I've become all about Dr. Pepper...it's my fountain drink of choice when getting fast food and we just bought a 12-pack of the diet Berries and Cream flavor. Perhaps I'm being beckoned back to my first Dr. Pepper love, the Dr. Pepper chapstick (a love that Richard also shares - see the August 18th and October 16th entries.

With our George Bush money we are moving things along with our basement project. We ordered carpet today, and will soon be getting the walls mudded, sanded, and textured. Sequentially, the walls will get done before the carpet, but we bought carpet first because Menards was having a sale (thanks John). Then the basement will be usable and Eric can reassemble the pool table which he's been anxiously awaiting. I'm excited for our recent progress and the long awaited project is finally moving forward again.

Can’t believe May is almost over! This month has really flown by; it’s been a mixed bag regarding happenings, but here are some of the highlights:
The next few weeks will bring some exciting changes to our basement. We've hired Steve Storlie Construction to finish the sheetrocking work. He taped today and will finish mudding this week, then next week he'll sand and texture...hurray!
The final coat of mud went on the walls today, assuming they're dry tomorrow they'll get sanded and textured the day after that.

It all started when I was nineteen and I heard this song by the Newsboys that spoke of a girl who was breaking free from her past, one of the lyrics is..."she's sinking down, hands above her head, held her, nineteen years and now they're letting go...." and I just thought it was so cool that I was 19 and the girl in the song was nineteen. So when I was twenty I tried to find a song about a twenty year old...couldn't find one but when I was twenty-two I fell in love with Switchfoot and I listed to their New Way to Be Human album all the time and one song in particular mentions a guy's 22nd birthday and my passion for finding "age songs" was renewed. I had really good luck for a couple years but the last two have been a bust. I've got one song tucked away for a future birthday. It'd be great to find one for 27 before it's too late, so if you know of a song, please send it my way.

Yesterday the guys finished sanding the basement. We needed to paint the ceiling before everything got textured so all the paint lines would be hidden. Since Eric's in Orlando this week the task was mine.Thank the Lord for Kerri and Brad who volunteered to help. Without them, there is no way I could have tackled this project.
Several mishaps made the evening challenging:
My very good friend Kyra got married over the weekend--congrats!! We made the trip out to Colorado Springs were the weather and scenery were equally beautiful. Below are a few of my favorites, but feel free to check out all the photos from the trip.
Eric and I drinking from one of the Manitou Springs.
cheesy tourist pic, I know...but it had to be done. (Jodi at Garden of the Gods)
Kyra and I at the wedding. Isn't she absolutely beautiful?
We got back late Monday night and *thought* the carpet guys were coming on Wednesday so I spent pretty much all day Tuesday painting the basement. Eric came home from work and put a second coat on only to later find out the carpet guys were not actually going to make it. Long story short, they'll be here Saturday. And despite my blistered hands and sore back, I'm glad it's done before the weekend. The neutral color is Believable Buff (Sherwin Williams) and the accent color is Carolina Gull (Benjamin Moore).

Inspired by the beautiful weather, we decided to get some outdoor furniture. We found some chairs we liked at Menards but the only thing standing in the way of a relaxing evening sitting outside on the lawn and us was the Honda Civic. But, have no fear, both we and the Civic prevailed. Eric's idea was to hoist the giant box containing the chairs, ottoman, and side table on top of the car and secure it with ropes...but I convinced him unpacking the items would be a better idea....I'm not convinced I was right. It was a fairly slow ride home, but all precious cargo made it safely. Eric proudly recalled his boyscout days and secured our chairs with double half-hitch knots. Always be prepared. (I'm so lucky to be married to such a multi-talented guy).

ps. Checkout photos of the basement (we got carpet this weekend!)

It's finally here! Eric and Kevin drove to the Cities today to pick up our couch. I'm very excited as the basement is officially usable. It's nice and cool down here and I think it'll be perfect for lounging and movie watching.

The last couple weekends have brought several new additions to the house. We (and when I say "we" I mean Eric) installed a ceiling fan in living room. It didn't come with a remote so we bought one separately which afforded me the exciting opportunity to use the package shark to open the package it came in!!
We also got an screen door and put that up last weekend (and when I say "we" I mean Eric). But I painted the front door the spring green color. I was a little nervous at first because it's pretty bright--but the screen door tempers it a bit and I really like it, and really, isn't that all that matters?
We also bought trim and doors for the basement but we haven't had time to tackle that project yet.

Man, July is a total blur. Whenever August hits I always panic a bit because it means summer is almost over. We've been quite busy this summer, having almost every weekend booked with one thing or another. This weekend has been somewhat low key...we had a really good time on the lake today with Tessa and Ryan--it was beautiful out and a perfect day to be on the water.
Tomorrow we're meeting Eric's folks in Wausau and getting a bookcase that his dad stripped for me. I think it will be a nice addition to our basement. Last weekend we traded my beloved Civic for a CR-V and while I'm still adjusting to the larger vehicle, it'll really come in handy tomorrow when we need the hauling capacity. Other than the CR-V, not much else is new around here.

Well, perhaps I jinxed myself in my last entry when I said nothing was new with us. This morning I started experiencing severe pain in my lower back combined with vomiting and a constant need to pee (hope this isn't too much information)...after a trip to urgent care, some x-rays, and a cat scan they determined I'm passing a kidney stone and admitted me.
So I'm currently sitting in my hospital bed, doped up on some very nice pain killers waiting for this thing to move on through. I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful Eric has been through all this. He's stayed by my side the entire time only leaving for brief trips home to let the dog out. He's home now walking Richard but asked the nurse to bring in a cot so he can spend the night here with me. I've always known he is a blessing from God, but going through something like this with just confirms even more in my heart that he is the only man for me. I thank God for you Eric.
add a comment | 2 commentsIt's been a week since I was discharged and I'm thrilled to say I'm feeling pretty much 100%. Last week I dealt with some side effects of the narcotics I was given through the IV but by Friday things were feeling much better. We camped near Rochester with Jake and Mis and their fam and mom and dad over the weekend and other than being a bit tired I had no health issues...now, memory issues....that's another thing. As we were setting up our tent Eric turned to me and said, "Where is the suitcase?" To which I matter of factly replied, "Sitting on the bed back in Eau Claire."
Anyway, I digress. So today I saw a kidney specialist who took some blood to run some tests and also wants me to save my urine for 24 hours so they can run some tests on that...yeah, that'll be fun. I think I'll wait 'til the weekend for that one since I doubt my co-workers would appreciate a giant container of urine in the fridge.
add a comment | 2 commentsI feel the pressure to blog about something...but I want it to be funny, or profound...or at the very least interesting. Something that will make people comment...Kerri had like 11 comments on her last entry, the most I've ever had is about five. This pressure and competitive drive must be sending me into a writer's block because for the life of me I can't think of anything "cool" to write about. A couple things that almost made my list...

Our trip to San Fran was great, but one incident stands out in particular as blog worthy.
On Monday after getting through airport security we stopped at the food court for breakfast. Like any good food court, San Jose has a Starbucks and I made a beeline for my usual Cinnamon Dulche Latte. While in line I spied two things, an advertisement for a delicious looking "perfect oatmeal" complete with brown sugar, raisins, and nuts, and a gentleman behind the counter loudly proclaiming, "Next in Line!" He was situated around a corner and it was difficult to see his register was open. Upon my turn in line I scurried over to him...only to watch him leave the register (without noticing me) and go to the back to restock muffins or something. I waited a little bit to see if he'd return, but he did not...and by this time I didn't feel comfortable butting back in line--I went to the back of the line and patiently waited...again. When I got to the front of the line, the gentleman returned to the register and proclaimed, "Next in Line!"
Not wanting to be bested by his claims again, I scurried to the other register and placed and order for my latte and perfect oatmeal. She asked my name and when I gave it to her she repeated back, "okay Tony." Before I could correct her she scribbled it on my cup. She then asked which toppings I wanted on my oatmeal and of course I wanted to make it just like the photo...little did I know that each topping was an additional .55 cents (!) and an additional 100 calories!
Fast forward to our flight from San Jose to Phoniex...as the plane went through some turbulence my stomach started going through flip flops...I get motion sickness and my perfect oatmeal wasn't feeling so perfect. I made it off the plane, but had yet another up-chuck experience in a public restroom. :(

Richard is 4 years old today. Happy Birthday!

Daylight savings is one of Eric's most favorite days. He talks about it for about a week before it arrives and is in a swimmingly good mood for the entire day. This morning when we woke up the first thing out of his mouth was, "Yeah extra hour of sleep." The man loves his sleep.
add a comment | 0 commentsRichard has allergies. We've been giving him allergy shots to stop him from itching but every once in a while he gets a bad flair up and won't stop. So we put booties on him to stop him from scratching. He does pretty well with them and this afternoon looked awfully cute in them.

We've been eating SmartOnes for lunch on a regular basis for about a year now. Today I had the three cheese ziti marinara one and it was soo good. It's my favorite SmartOne; it tastes like "real" food. I wish I could eat it every day, but I'm afraid I'll burn out on it. I do that a lot...I really like something, like a food or a song, and I'll enjoy it so much that I don't really like it that much anymore. I do that with music most of all--I'll buy a song on iTunes and then listened to it over and over and over until I'm kinda sick of it. Song I'm currently hitting repeat with: I'm Your's by Jason Myraz. So, so good. Maybe as good as three cheese ziti.
add a comment | 2 commentsEric got me a new iPod Nano for my birthday last month and I love it. My iPod mini was good to me for many years, but it wasn't holding a charge very well and some of the peripherals we'd purchased weren't working very well. So, enter my new iPod which is very slim and very pink.
Tonight my precious iPod was nowhere to be found. We were listening to it in the car last night on the way to our Bible study but it did not make it back to the house. After checking the car and the garage we took a drive over to Kerri and Brad's where we met last night. Sitting upright next to the curb was my iPod nano. It was in it's pink sock which was soaked from being in the rain but the iPod itself after being wiped off is working perfectly. Thank you Lord!!
And just in time too because I have a new song to play over and over and over and over...Rock and Roll by Eric Hutchinson is catchy and cute and I've listened to it three times since I started writing this entry. I heard it on Cities 97 on my way to Menomonie and bought it on iTunes first chance I got. I wish they'd play good music like this on the stations in Eau Claire--their music choices are so safe.
add a comment | 0 commentsI started work on my Master's...I'm pursuing a fully online degree through Boise State in Educational Technology. I've only had one class and although in general I've enjoyed it, I have an outline for my 6-8 page paper due for on Tuesday and the actual paper due on December 12th. I should be working on it right now but I really, really don't want to. In the "real" world if handed a 6-8 page paper to anyone there is no way anyone would read it--no one has time to read something that long...they want it on one page, maybe two. So I'm having trouble getting my brain to elaborate.
To distract myself I'm blogging (obviously) and pondering Christmas decorations. Generally, I like to wait until at least December 1st to put anything up, but I'm kind of in the mood today. Last night as we pulled into our neighborhood after spending Thanksgiving with my family we saw many houses with lights up and I was cheerful about it. AND this morning when I turned on the radio station to hear non-stop Christmas music playing, I actually listened to three songs before switching it off in disgust. Three whole songs! I love Christmas, but non-stop music very much annoys me and yes, I complain every year.
